Investment Trends In UK Clean Technology 2000-2004

Clean Technology - any form of technology which aims to reduce or eliminate the environmental impact of current practices - has become an area of increasing interest to both investors and corporations as both legislation and the rising concern over ongoing environmental changes combine to bring this area to the fore. The Carbon Trust works with UK companies to assist them in reducing their damaging environmental impact, specifically carbon dioxide emissions. The Carbon Trust also acts directly to assist those companies developing novel clean technologies by direct equity investments, both individually and in conjunction with other private equity investors. Library House was commissioned by The Carbon Trust to produce the first bottom-up analysis of the entire UK Clean Technology sector in order to allow The Carbon Trust to gain further insight into the sector in which it is operating, and also to raise the awareness of clean technology as a sector to investors. In order to do this, Library House screened over 4,000 private UK companies and found 285 companies directly developing novel clean technologies. Library House provided The Carbon Trust with complete business profiles of these companies, including their funding history and details of the technology being developed, and continues to track the progress of these companies on an ongoing basis in order to allow The Carbon Trust to maintain its position as one of the most informed organisations active in the UK clean technology market. This report provides an overview of the findings of the Library House research into the sector and highlights the ongoing investment trends in the UK clean technology sector during the five-year period between 2000-2004.
